Classics

Many of these books are more challenging/advanced or have concepts that are harder to understand. One of the reasons for this is that most of these books were written a while ago. Don't let this deter you from reading one, though- if you think you can handle it, go for it! Difficulty doesn't make a book any less fantastic.

Sherlock Holmes: Series

By: Arthur Conan Doyle

By Arthur Conan Doyle, the Sherlock Holmes stories are short, fast-moving, thrilling, and fascinating. If you like brainy mystery novels with interesting characters, these stories are for you. There are four Sherlock Holmes novels and lots of short stories that you can find in books that are titled "A Collection of Sherlock Holmes", "Best of Sherlock Holmes", etc. The Sherlock Holmes stories are about Dr. Watson and his friend Sherlock Holmes, set in the 1890's. Sherlock Holmes is genius detective with many strange quirks and powers of deduction, and he doesn't care what people think of him. Each story is about one of Watson's and Holmes's crime-solving adventures and has endless exciting twists and turns. There's always something to learn with these stories, and you'll be kept guessing all the way through. Highly recommended.

1984

By: George Orwell

1984 is probably one of the most famous dystopian novels ever written. The story follows the life of a man named Winston, a prole in 'the Party', which is supposedly ruled by 'Big Brother'. Big Brother & the Party constantly surveil their citizens, and are also reforming language to eliminate even the thought of rebellion. They control every aspect of their citizens' lives. Winston begins a subtle rebellion by keeping a diary of his thoughts- this is punishable by death. Him and his lover try to rebel against the oppression no one else appears to see. Obviously, this goes horribly for them. Later in the book, you learn more in-depth about how the Party is controlling the citizens- this, and what happens to Winston when he gets caught is BEYOND MIND-BENDING. The last 1/3-1/4 of the book is absolute INSANITY. This book is famous for a reason! It was a little slow in the beginning, but the warning 1984 conveys is critical for you to know. It was the most thought-provoking thing I've ever read, in a terrifying way. At some point in your life, you HAVE TO read this.

The Art Of War

By: Sun Tzu

This book was simple, interesting, and wise.  It is a very short book but the messages in it can apply to a wide range of things.  It is not just a book of military strategies, it is a book of life advice.  This book was a very intriguing and unique read.-Norah

Animal Farm

By: George Orwell

I immensely enjoyed reading Animal Farm.  This book was a spot-on metaphor for communism and how good intentions can turn bad.  Although this book was short the story is riveting, the character development is on point, and the characters seem as real as any human characters I’ve ever read.  In short, this book is genius.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes action, and character-driven stories.-Norah
I honestly didn't like this book very much. Many of the people I know who've read it really enjoyed it, but it just didn't do the same for me. While it was an interesting concept, it just wasn't written in a way that kept my attention. Overall, I'd say it's a book to try, but one of my least favorite books. -Allie

The Importance of Being Earnest

By: Oscar Wilde

The Importance of Being Earnest is a play set in 1800th century, high-society London, England.  The two main characters both lead double lives and this gets them into loads of humorous situations. Absolutely incredible.  Relatively easy to understand despite being written over 100 years ago.  So funny!!  Absolutely genius lines as well as plot twists.  When Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for being who he was, the world was robbed of the next Shakespeare.-Norah

Jane Eyre

By: Charlotte Bronte

This book was rather slow in the beginning but all together a great book. I loved how the character Jane Eyre was a independent person it added to the story especially because of the time that the book is set in. The book was in a old english, so the book was a little harder to read but all around it was a great book!-Annabelle

Anne of Green Gables

By: L.M. Montgomery

This charming tale is about a little orphan called Anne, spelled with an 'E'. Soon, Anne arrives to Green Gables. The only problem is that Anne was supposed to be a boy!  The owners of Green Gables now are faced with a problem; whether to keep Anne or send her back. Read this classic tale to find out the end!-Allie

Little Women

By: Louisa May Alcott

Little Women is a charming tale about the March sisters, Beth, Meg, Jo, and Amy. The sisters go through their life troubles, love and loss, heartache and healing. The girls' best friend Laurie helps them through these things and causes a little trouble of his own. This is one of my favorite books! You must read it, and that is an order.-Allie
Little Women is a truly amazing book. I bawled my eyes out at one point but I can't say when or it will spoil! In the book, there are four sisters, Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth. The book is about their life struggles. There is also a few movies for this. READ THIS BOOK NOW!!!-Bella
Loved this book, I mean loved it. I have probably read it like a bajillion times. They are the four sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy. You can clearly see the character development and the trials of each sister. Now, Simon Says, GO READ IT!-Annabelle
